THE ANTICHRIST AND JERRY FALWELL: While speaking on the subject
of the second coming of Christ at a Kingsport, Tenn., church,
earlier this week, I mentioned that I believe the Antichrist is
alive and well on Earth today. I also said that I believe, as do
most evangelical leaders, that he will be a male and a Jew. This
got me in some hot water with the Anti-Defamation League. That
group's director, Abraham Foxman, accused me of extolling anti-
Semitic comments "rooted in Christian theological extremism."
However, this is far from the truth. My statements were, in
fact, rooted in prophetic orthodox Christian doctrine that most
theologians have embraced for two millennia. Since the
Antichrist will be the utter antithesis of Christ, he must
certainly embody many elements of Christ in his own evil
ministry. I want to make it perfectly clear to all my "Falwell
Confidential" friends that I am wholeheartedly pro-Israel and am
committed to ensuring that the State of Israel remain free. The
Jews are God's chosen people and we are, as Christians,
miraculously connected to them as adopted brethren. I have a
wonderful relationship with Israel President Benjamin Netanyahu
and many other Jewish leaders. And I am a frequent visitor to
the Holy Land. I sincerely love the Jewish people. I honestly
believe that, as a Christian, it is my responsibility to honor
and revere the people God chose as His own. However, my love and
respect of the Jewish people cannot alter the prophetic truths of
the Bible. Keep looking to the skies, my friends. He is
returning soon!
THE ISSUE OF PRIVATE CHARACTER: Virginia Attorney General Mark
Earley recently addressed a gathering of conservative Americans
and issued an inspired speech on the need for America's leaders
to embrace private character. I'm afraid that many of our
political leaders today have forgotten the necessity of denying
their personal weakness for the greater good of the land. Mark
Earley reminded us that George Washington had a volcanic temper.
Abraham Lincoln suffered from fits of depression. And Douglas
MacArthur was, at times, an egotistical commander. However, each
of these men rose above these personal weaknesses by exerting
self control in the interest of their nation. They understood
that personal character was more important than risking national
interests by succumbing to their obvious flaws. I fear this is a
lost art. Today, President Bill Clinton is a walking
contradiction to the virtue of private character. When the doors
are closed, Mr. Clinton has habitually acquiesced to the most
ignoble depravities and placed the needs of the nation behind his
own desires. In defending himself, Mr. Clinton manipulates the
rule of law to squeeze out of his careless predicaments.
Remember that Mr. Clinton championed sexual harassment laws as a
candidate and then attempted to destroy the young woman who
accused him of reveling in the thing he publicly opposed. That
is a complete lack of personal, private character. Our president
has no understanding of the term. This is not how our Founding
Fathers intended a president to lead the people. President
Clinton has turned his back on the elements of private character
and self control that were once expected and demanded of a
president ... and of a husband. America will pay a steep price
for the acceptance of Bill Clinton's behavior -- specifically
because it is decisively contrary to the moral heritage
established by Washington, Lincoln, MacArthur and countless
heroes of this nation. Mark Helprin, writing in "The Wall Street
Journal," earlier this week, noted, "the American sense of
justice, which though at times slow to awaken, has, like the long
gray line, never failed us." I sincerely hope this is true.
Character matters, my friends. If the people allow their
comfortable lives to obstruct this age-old doctrine, the future
of our nation is in serious peril.
THE STRENGTH OF THE CONSTITUTION: Larry Arnn, president of the
Claremont Institute, reminded us this week that the Constitution
-- the law of the land -- must be enforced for all, or that law
will eventually be used against us. "The Constitution," he
observed, "deserves our reverence, because it requires the equal
application of the law, even when popular passion would exempt
its chief enforcer." In other words, popular sentiment has
nothing to do with the preservation of the laws that were
designed to protect us from the tyranny we escaped in England.
The Constitution is what binds this nation. It is the document
that ensures that every man and woman be treated equally under
the law. It protects us. It guides us. And it preserves us.
The men who wrote it were far from perfect, but they were
honorable men who sacrificed and humbled themselves to forge the
document that preserves our cherished freedoms. "The
Constitution has a purpose and integrity of its own," Larry said,
"and its authority is greater than whatever the latest poll
numbers -- or even the latest election -- decree." Amen, Larry.
May we be ever prayerful that God will bless America again -
even though we are far from deserving!
